Next time you’re in the City of Roslyn, park your car downtown and look up the ridge towards the north. Just on the outskirts of town, you can walk right into the 300 acre city-owned Roslyn Urban Forest (RUF). Keep your eyes peeled for the signs welcoming you at the boundaries. The RUF also includes some forested land around the historic cemeteries. Those lands link up with public access through a sensitive area called the Stream C corridor, providing access through Suncadia Resort all the way to the Cle Elum River.
Now’s the time to grab your snowshoes, boots or skis and explore this part of Roslyn. The RUF is managed for its stewardship values and the City, The Wilderness Society, and the National Park Service’s Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance program are all working with local citizens and visiting users to develop a Recreation and Trails Plan. For now, please be aware that the trails are in transition and there are a variety of users interested in getting out onto the RUF. The RUF is open to all non-motorized recreation use. Another trail option is the nearby Coal Mines Trail, where you can play alongside other recreationists. The trail connects Cle Elum to Roslyn and Ronald.
So check it out, enjoy the forest and make sure to Leave No Trace. Make sure to come back over the next couple of years to see this town jewel blossom into a well-planned and sustainable recreation asset.
